Alice G. (Duguay) Bernard, age 94, of Swansea, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2025, at Charlton Memorial Hospital following a recent illness. She was the loving widow of Rene G. Bernard.
Born in Lowell, MA, to Peter and Rose (Cote) Duguay, Alice moved to Worcester with her family in the 1930s. In December 1952, she married Rene, and they made their home in Worcester before relocating to Spencer in 1967, returning to Worcester in 1980. Alice settled in Swansea in 1989, where she remained for the rest of her life. During World War II, Alice began her working career at Brown Shoe in Worcester. In the 1970s, she joined Sears Roebuck, working in the men’s clothing department. She dedicated over two decades to the company, retiring from Sears in Swansea in 1992. After retirement, Alice continued working for Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale as a Demo Team Member. Alice was passionate about travel and camping, sharing many adventures with her late husband Rene as part of the Rambling Pilgrims, a chapter of the Holiday Rambler Travel Trailer Club. Together, they camped across the country. Alice was also a dedicated member of St. Dominic’s Church, where she was active in the Women’s Guild. An avid sports fan, Alice cheered for the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. She also enjoyed candlepin bowling, a hobby she embraced with enthusiasm. She is survived by her sons, Mark E Bernard and his wife Robin of Barre, MA and Peter R. Bernard of Swansea, her grandchildren, twins, Christopher Bernard and Corey Bernard, and Rebecca Bernard, three great grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Ernest “Paul” Duguay, Donald Duguay, Irene Perry and Pauline Swedis. Her Funeral will be held Thursday, January 16, 2025, at 9:00 AM from the Waring-Sullivan Home at Birchcrest, 189 Gardners Neck Road, Swansea followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Dominic’s Church, 1277 G.A.R. Highway, Swansea. Relatives and friends are invited. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton, MA. |
