Ernest E. Nichols, 90, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, after an illness. He was born in Clinton, the son of Ernest and Irene (Roseberry) Nichols and had lived most of his life in Rutland. He leaves his beloved wife of 70 years, Lillian M. (Allard) Nichols; his son, Michael Nichols and his wife, Nancy of Rutland; his daughters, Barbara Nichols of Rutland, and Nancy Nichols of Auburn; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers and three sisters. Ernest owned and operated Nichols Floor Company for many years before retiring in 1997. He proudly served in the Army National Guard and was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Church. He formerly coached Little League and was an assistant coach for the Babe Ruth League. In his leisure, Ernest enjoyed woodworking, bowling, old Western movies and he loved to watch the Red Sox and Patriots. The Nichols family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for the care and compassion provided by the staff of Notre Dame Hospice. Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 27th in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. Funeral services for Ernest will be held on Monday, November 28th with a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick’s Church, 258 Main Street, Rutland. Burial will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Notre Dame Hospice, 555 Plantation Street, Worcester, MA 01605. |
