Elizabeth Ann (French) Montgomery, 83, of Worcester passed away peacefully at the
Lutheran nursing home on Friday, October 15, 2021 with her sister Dottie by her side.
She was predeceased by the love of her life and her husband of 55 years, David K.
Montgomery, who passed away in May 2020.
Elizabeth, a beautiful and fitting name for her was known as “Betty Ann” by her family
and friends.
Elizabeth leaves behind two children, a daughter Diane Dyberg of Worcester, and a son
James and his wife Kim Montgomery of Westborough. Her grandchildren, Nathaniel
and Olivia Montgomery of Westborough. She also leaves behind her only great-grandson
Braden Montgomery; two sisters Dorothy Barter and her husband John of Auburn,
Robin Munley and her husband Edward of Coventry, Connecticut and many
nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, George and Rose French; a
sister, Patricia Olney, and her son, Kevin W. Montgomery.
Elizabeth was born in Manchester, New Hampshire but as a young child the family
moved to Worcester for a few years before settling into Oxford MA, where she attended
school and graduated from Oxford High School. She went on to earn her teaching
degree at Worcester State College. She taught for several years before deciding to start
a family and became a fulltime mom.
After her children were grown, she became a personal care aide for many years with
several elderly clients that became like part of her family.
Elizabeth was an avid gardener and had a “green thumb”. She loved to spend time
tending to her gardens. She also enjoyed growing many varieties of indoor plants and
even converted the family dining room into a mini greenhouse.
Elizabeth enjoyed many trips and family vacations to Cape Cod. She also enjoyed going
on day trips throughout New England, New York City and state and Washington D.C.
with her best friend and daughter Diane. They would also do many other activities
together including; cooking, baking, shopping, dining out, long walks and watching
several of their favorite tv shows. They especially enjoyed watching their beloved Red
Sox. She loved spending time with her sisters and their families, having many cookouts,
family reunions and camping trips.
Elizabeth was a very outgoing, friendly person and had many special lifelong friends
and even became a second mom to many of the neighborhood kids, and continued to
have them over after her children were grown. Always a positive person, it was hard not
to laugh and smile whenever you were with her.
Elizabeth was a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Worcester and was a
member of the choir for many years. A very spiritual person she was a member of a
neighborhood prayer group that included several Christian denominations.
Elizabeth’s family would like to thank all the staff at the Lutheran Rehabilitation and
Skilled Nursing Center, your compassionate care and love was appreciated by her
family. The family also wants to send a special thanks to her friends and roommates
Carol and Ann for being there and looking out for her. Also want to thank Summit Elder
Care, her care team of doctors, nurses and especially Joanna P.
Due to the restrictions during 2020 both David and Elizabeth will be celebrated
together and relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend their visiting hours
on Monday, November 8th from 9-11 AM at the Chiampa Funeral Home ~Sumner House
~ 5 Church Road, On the Common, Shrewsbury Center. A prayer service will follow.
Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Childrens Hospital. In keeping with the Covid-19 guidelines, all attendees are kindly asked to wear face coverings and practice social distancing while at the funeral home. The family would like to thank the Chiampa Funeral Home for their guidance during this difficult time.
