John Adjami, 90, of Worcester died Tuesday, January 1st in Knollwood Nursing Home surrounded by his family. He leaves his wife of 60 years, Souraya (Mardirossian) Adjami; his children, Monique Shevlin and her husband, Michael of Portsmouth, NH, Victoria Adjami of Boston and Ronald Adjami and his wife, Lori of Westwood; a sister, Yvette Shkan of Arcadia, CA. He was known as “Giddo” or Grandpa to his five grandchildren, Nick Adjami, Rachel Adjami, Mikaela Shevlin, Ben Adjami and Macy Shevlin; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and George Mekel.
He was born in Aleppo, Syria the son of Mihran and Victoria (Haddad) Adjami. At the age of 16, John emigrated to the United States. Mr. Adjami was drafted at the age of 18 to the United States Army, serving during the Korean War as a medic. He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and the International Club. John worked for Imperial Distributors for many years and owned a convenience store in Worcester and New York. His passion was antiques and retired as an antique dealer after 20 years. Mr. Adjami enjoyed buying and selling antique postcards, magazines and oriental rugs.
His funeral is Saturday, January 5th with a service at 11:00 AM in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 256 Hamilton Street. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. A calling hour will be held on Saturday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 256 Hamilton Street, Worcester, MA 01604 or to Knollwood Nursing Home, Employee Appreciation Fund, 87 Briarwood Circle, West Boylston, MA 01583.
