RUSSELL E. DUFFY

     Russell E. Duffy, 91, of Worcester, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2017 at home after an illness.

Mr. Duffy is survived by a nephew Kevin J. Duffy of Huntingtown, Md., and a niece Kathleen Jakubowicz of Cherry Hill, N.J.

Mr. Duffy was born in Worcester and resided in Worcester all of his life. He graduated from North High School and the New England School of Accounting and completed special courses in advanced accounting problems, federal income taxes, estate taxes, business mathematics, and the CPA Review Course at Boston University.

He became a certified public accountant on October 10, 1957, and was a 40 year member of the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of CPAs. In 1997, he was elected an honorary member of the Massachusetts Society and American Institute of CPAs.

During his professional accounting career, he was employed in various capacities by George A. Smith & Co., James E. Griffin & Co., Deloitte-Touche and J.L. Blake & Co. over a period of 26 years.

In November of 1983, he became employed by the Worcester County Institution for Savings as Director of Internal Audit and was subsequently promoted to Vice-President of the bank. While employed by the bank, he served on the Senior Management Committee, and the Massachusetts Society of CPAs Bank Accounting and Audit and Electronic Data Processing committees. He retired from WCIS following the purchase of the bank by the Bank of Boston in June of 1994. He returned to public accounting practice and retired in June of 2002.

Russell was an avid golfer and a member of Worcester Country Club. He was a former member of Wachusett, Manchester and Pleasant Valley country clubs.

There will be a calling hour Thursday, January 12, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 25 Fales St., Worcester. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
