Sidney B. Wetherhead, 93, passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2014 at St. Vincent Hospital after an illness. He was born in Springfield, Vermont, the son of William R. and Marguerite J. (Guinand) Wetherhead. He leaves his wife of 22 years, Jeannine T. (Fortier) Larson Wetherhead; a son, Stephen A. Wetherhead and his wife, Debra of Roswell, Georgia; two step-sons, Paul E. Larson and his wife, Debra of West Boylston and Donald A. Larson and his wife, Deborah of Rescue, CA; three step-daughters, Andrea J. Fisher of Hudson, Cynthia G. Grove and her husband, Peter of Reno, NV and Wendy L. Holt of Hubbardston; a brother, Richard Wetherhead of Houston, TX; twelve grandchildren, Rachel, Lauren, Daniel, Holly, Tiffany, Christopher, Eric, Erica, Lisa, Kyle, Brian and Timothy; and several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his first wife, M. Lucille (Vance) Wetherhead; two daughters, Catherine Ann and Elizabeth Jean Wetherhead; a brother, Walter Wetherhead; and a sister, Elizabeth Roberts. He honorably served his country during WWII as a Second Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps and was a B24 instructor. He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1947 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Wetherhead’s career at Norton Co. began in June, 1947 and spanned 40 years where he served as a district sales manager then general sales manager before joining Norton International Division, Norton Abrasives in South Africa, then became area director of Europe, Africa and the Middle East and followed as an international director of engineering, director of marketing in the Abrasives Materials Group, then as a marketing specialist for the Materials Division before becoming a consultant in the U.S. and internationally before his retirement in September of 1987. He was an avid golfer and a 20-year member of Riverbend Golf Club in Tequesta, FL, a former member of Worcester Country Club and played at Wachusett Country Club. He enjoyed gardening and caring for his property. The family would like to thank the Holden Police and Fire departments. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a calling hour from 12 to 1 p.m. on Friday, May 30, followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. Burial will be private at Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton.
