Eugene N. “Gene” Bernier, 83, of Worcester, passed away on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 in Beaumont Nursing Home surrounded by his loving family. Eugene is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Loretta A. (Iafrato) Bernier; two daughters: Donna Murzycki and her husband Stephen of Worcester and Denise Sliwoski and her husband Charles of Millbury; four grandchildren: Jeffrey and Katie Sliwoski, Jason Murzycki, Nicholas Murzycki and his wife Kristin; a brother, Roland Bernier of Leicester; a sister, Bernace Marzo of Worcester; many nieces, nephews and friends. He is predeceased by three brothers: Henry, Leo and Edward Bernier. Eugene was born in Worcester, a son of the late Alfonse and Leona (Benoit) Bernier and has lived here all his life. He attended Worcester Boys Trade and graduated as a machinist. Eugene later entered the United States Army where he served his country in WWII. During his tour of duty, he found that his favorite place he visited was Germany. He received the Army of Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He worked as a Supervisor for R & A Machine for many years before retiring. He previously worked as a supervisor for Crompton Knowles Corporation and Firematic. Eugene was a member of St. Christopher Church. He also was a member of Lincoln Lanes Bowling League; he loved fishing, golfing and playing cards, especially pitch. He will be greatly missed by everyone. Eugene’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the Beaumont Nursing Facility and to the Salmon Hospice Care for the outstanding care and compassion they had given him. A service for Eugene will be held, Thursday, August 12th, at 10:00 a.m. in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. Calling hours will be held from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. in the funeral home, immediately prior to his service. Interment will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
