Thomas J. Smith, Sr., age 77, passed away on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at UMass Medical Center – University Campus in Worcester. Born in Holden, the son of late Harold F. and Alma (Merchant) Smith.
Tom grew up in Holden, graduating from Wachusett Regional High School. A hardworking man, Tom always worked multiple jobs to provide for his family. He was a machinist for many years at Kidde-Fenwal, Inc. in Ashland, a mechanic at Bob’s Summit Auto in Worcester, and was a co-owner of Smith Brothers Racing, where he traveled to race tracks all over New England.
He enjoyed spending time watching sports, NASCAR, playing cards with his friends, working on small engine equipment, and fishing. For many years, he was a high diver and swimmer. Selfless in nature, Tom always put other’s needs before his own. Most importantly, he loved and cared for his family.
He is survived by his life partner, Alice M. (Denny) Smith; a son, Thomas J. Smith, Jr. and his wife, Audra of Paxton; a daughter, Christine M. Girouard and her husband, Brian of Charlton; three brothers, Ronald Smith and Theresa of Oakham, Harold Smith and his wife, Joan of Paxton, John Smith of Oxford; three sisters, Barbara Lyons of Providence, RI, Priscilla Davis and her husband, Gary of Webster, Shirley Tomlin and her husband, Ed of Fort Worth, TX; three grandchildren, Matthew Thomas Girouard, Emily Rose Girouard, Amanda Rose Smith; many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by two brothers, David and Robert Smith; and his sister, Linda Tupper.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Tom’s family from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Monday, April 26, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A funeral service will take place at 10:00 am the following day, Tuesday, April 27, at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest following the service at Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Ave., Paxton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 309 Waverley Oaks Rd., Waltham, MA 02452. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home of Holden.
