Thelma (LaFontaine) Johnson, 89, of Worcester passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 28th 2017, with her loving family by her side joining in heaven, her loving husband Myron who passed away in 2010.
Thelma the daughter of Walter E. and Catherine E. (Alig) LaFontaine, was born May 16th 1927 in Erie, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Academy High School in Erie, and earned an associate’s degree at the age of 60. In 1947, Thelma married Myron L Johnson and began a 63 year marriage of love, devotion and raising family until Myron passed away. Thelma also found her passion as a mentor, assisting adults with special needs for over 10 years, often times inviting them to holiday dinners and special family gatherings.
Thelma is survived by her six children, Marcia Downey and her husband Chuck of Worcester, Gail Johnson and her husband Doug Wittmer of Dennis, Bruce Johnson and his wife Mary of Worcester, Diane Johnson and her fiancée Shawn Hill of Savanah, GA., Beverly Johnson and her husband Mark Bergstrom of Charleston SC., Sue Brosnihan and her husband Dennis of Dudley; 14 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. Besides her parents and husband, two brothers, Howard and James LaFontaine all pre deceased her.
Thelma was a member of Our Lady of Loreto Church, the Worcester and Shrewsbury Senior Citizens and loved playing Bridge. She was a beautiful person who enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. Thelma also found pleasure spending time with family and friends, the holidays, family dinners, striding and walking while spending winters in Kissimmee Florida. In Thelma’s life, her husband, children and grandchildren always came first. Her faith and sense of humor kept the family grounded through the ups and downs of life and always had a smile or kind word for all. Thelma’s passing leaves a hole in our hearts but her loving and caring soul will not be forgotten.
A period of calling hours will be held Friday March 31st from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. before proceeding in procession to Our Lady of Loreto Church, 37 Massasoit Rd. where her funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 pm. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Loreto Church, 37 Massasoit Rd. 01604.
