Subscription Update Obituary

     Stuart J. Merchant, Sr., 85, formerly of Auburn and Shrewsbury, died Tuesday, July 29, 2014.

His wife of 23 years Gloria M. (Vitale) Merchant predeceased him in 1974. He leaves five children, Stuart J. Merchant, Jr. and his wife Elaine of Spencer, Josephine F. Cummings and her husband Robert of Rutland, Virginia A. Nugent and her husband Paul of Westborough, Arthur J. Merchant of Barre and Susan L. Wians and her husband Glenn of Millbury. He also leaves 11 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. A brother Charles W. Marchand and two sisters, Fernande Gleason and Alma Smith predeceased him.

Stuart was born in Worcester, son of Desire and Josephine (Dionne) Merchant and was an Army Veteran of the Korean War. He was a truck driver for many years retiring from Red Star Express, and prior to that he worked at Consolidated Beverage and P.S. Dubrey Trucking. He was member of the Auburn Lodge of Elks and was very active at the former Westborough Speedway.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, August 3rd from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at CALLAHAN, FAY & CASWELL FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle St. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, August 4th at 10:30 am in the funeral home. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St, Framingham, MA 01701.
