Shirley M. Bohanan died Sunday, February 15th at the Lowell Health Care Center, after a long and very courageous struggle with Huntington’s disease.

She was born on July 3rd, 1929 to Robert and Maude (Grant) Elliott. Shirley was the wife of George Leland Bohanan who died on November 13th, 1996. Shirley leaves her loving children Sharon Keown, Austin Bohanan and his wife Sheryl, Geoffrey Bohanan and his wife Judy, Pamela Bjorklund and her partner, Brian Eager, Elisa Maffei and her husband, Glenn. She also leaves fourteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren; and a sister, Marilyn Jaxheimer. She was predeceased by a brother Elmer Elliott, who also battled Huntington’s disease.

Shirley was a graduate of Kingston High School in New York and attended two years of business school before joining Prudential Insurance, where she worked for 12 years. She was a Senior Associate and Secretary to the District Manager in Kingston NY, and worked for several years in the Prudential office in Auburn, MA.

She was a member of The Truth, a nondenominational Christian church group. She loved reading, walking, music and movie musicals as well as attending family gatherings.

Shirley was diagnosed with Huntington’s disease in her early 40’s and made brave efforts to work and provide for her family for as long as she could. She was a member and contributor to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America and expressed final wishes to be a brain donor in order to contribute to HD research efforts. Shirley’s children wish to thank the Lowell Health Care Center in Lowell, MA for their dedicated long term care of Shirley and for their commitment to HD patients.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Huntington Disease Society of America (HDSA) through their secure web site or by mailing to: HDSA, 505 Eighth Avenue, Suite 902, NY, NY 10018.
