Russell E Black, 83, of Worcester, died Friday January 15, 2016 in the Jewish Health Care Center after a long illness.
He was born and raised in Worcester, son of the late Joseph and Flora (Merrick) Black. He was a lifelong member of Saint Peters Church. He graduated from Worcester Boys Trade before joining the Navy where he was stationed on the USS WASP Air Craft Carrier. Through the Navy, Russell was fortunate to see a lot of the world. After leaving the Navy, Russell joined the Army National Guard and served as a Sergeant for three years.
Russell worked at the print factory J.S. Wesby and Sons before becoming a Boiler fireman at Norton Company, where he worked until his retirement. During this time, Russell joined the American Legion and became an Honor Guard. He proudly marched at military parades and stood guard at funerals.
Beside his deep love for the Navy, Russell was passionate about his Scottish heritage and spent many years involved in the Clan Greggor Society as a council member. Family trips to Loon Mountain for the Scottish Highland Games were a highlight of his life. He also enjoyed traveling with his family to England, Scotland, Wales, and many Southern and Western States.
Russell leaves his wife and soulmate of 55 years, Barbara A. (Benoit) Black of Worcester; a son, Jeffrey A Black of Worcester, and a daughter, Deborah M Hill of Charlton. He also leaves behind his five grandchildren, Patrick, Joshua, Samantha, Zachary, and Nicholas, who loved and looked up to him. He leaves behind a brother Philip and his wife Kathleen, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved son Christopher, and brother Joseph.
Calling hours are Monday, January 18th from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. in O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue. His funeral is Tuesday, January 19th with a Mass at 10:00 A.M. in St. Peter’s Church, 931 Main Street. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
