Robert "Butch" F. Westerlind, Jr., 63, of Millbury, passed away in his home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, November 3, 2010.
Butch is survived by his mother, Geraldine J. (Davis) Westerlind of Worcester; a daughter, Christine Smyth and her husband Donald of Quinebaug, CT; his best friend of eighteen years, Joan DeSantis; three brothers: Dennis Westerlind of Worcester, David Westerlind and Gene Westerlind and his wife Cheryl all of Millbury; two sisters: Linda Westerlind and Carol Bernardi and her husband Michael all of Worcester; a granddaughter, Samantha Smyth; many nieces and nephews. Butch was born in Worcester, son of the late Robert F. Westerlind, Sr. He grew up in Worcester, graduating from Commerce High School, later settling in Millbury.
Robert served his nation proudly in the United States Army during the Vietnam War where he was an infantry combat veteran serving with the 1st Cavalry Division. He was awarded a Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, an Air Medal and a Combat Infantry Badge.
Butch worked for many years in the Worcester Department of Public Works before he retired. He was a member of the D.A.V Chapter 4. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson and flying remote control aircraft. He found great joy, spending time with his family.
Calling hours will be held tonight, Friday, November 5, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 6, at 10:30 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 353 Grove Street, Worcester. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
