Beloved Husband, Father and Friend, Robert F. Carey, died February 9 in St. Vincent’s hospital. He was 80 years old.
Bob, as he was known, is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara A. Bayrouty. He also leaves behind his three children: Selina A. Carey-Young (and husband Lewis Young III and their children Lewis and Arianna) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; Michael F. Carey of Greenwich, CT and Christopher P. Carey (and his wife Sandra Benavente-Carey and their children, Aidan, Dylan and Jack) of Lincoln, RI. Born in Northborough, MA to the late Benjamin and Margaret Slaney, Bob was a graduate of St. Peter’s High School and served in the United States Marine Corps where he was a staff sergeant and sharp-shooter during the Korean War. After 34 years, Bob retired as a first-class machinist from Wyman-Gordon.
Bob was an avid sportsman and had a passionate love for the outdoors, particularly fishing. This is something he passed on, not only to his children but to others through volunteer service. He enjoyed teaching young people about fishing and wildlife conservation and he taught the Fishing Merit Badge at Treasure Valley Boy Scout Reservation. Bob received the prestigious Silver Beaver Award from the Mohegan Council for his outstanding service on the lives of youth. In addition to this, the AFL-CIO presented Bob with the George Meany Award for his significant contributions to youth in the Boy Scouts of America. Bob was a lifetime member of the Quabbin Angler’s, Singletary Rod & Gun Club and he received the president award from the Massachusetts Sportmans Council.
Beyond his dedication to nature and the outdoors, Bob was an amazing story-teller. His children best remember him for his uncanny ability to mesmerize audiences with great tales, and they say that their talent to weave a good story comes from him.
