Richard J. Walsh, Capt. USNR- Ret, 81, of Worcester and Sebastian, FL passed away suddenly and peacefully on March 3, 2024. Rick was born in Brighton, MA on March 23, 1942, the son of the late Irvine and Virginia (Bowler) Walsh.
“A life well lived” is a phrase that anyone who knew Rick would agree is how he lived his life. From his childhood days in Brighton and then Worcester where he continued his education at St Peter’s High School ’59 and the College of the Holy Cross ’63 he knew how to work hard and have fun in every aspect of life. Rick was a member of the ROTC program at Holy Cross and entered the Navy right after graduation. He was stationed in both Norfolk, VA and Treasurer Island, California for many years and when he started his family with his former wife, Carol (Brown) Walsh, he became a member of the Navy reserves for decades and retiring from the Navy as a Captain. Rick was a proud veteran having served in the Vietnam War. In 1970 Rick joined the family business and was the owner of Walsh and Associates Real Estate for over 35 years and a REALTOR® for 54 years. Rick held numerous leadership positions at both the REALTOR® Association of Central MA and the Massachusetts Association of Realtors. Rick was a longtime Holden resident and owned businesses and was involved in many community organizations.
Rick is survived by his daughters, Cindy (Walsh) MacKenzie and her husband Scott and Debbie (Walsh) LaCortiglia and her husband Matt and his grandchildren, Nicolas and Madison LaCortiglia and Caroline and Brooke MacKenzie. He is predeceased by his Fiance, Karen Etre who just passed away in January. He shared many years and events with Karen’s family; her son, Chris Etre and his wife Crystal and Brandon, Kirsten and Brad Etre. Rick is also predeceased by his brother, Barry Walsh.
Rick was an avid traveler and spent as much time as he could on or overlooking the water. His travels took him overseas and up and down the
east coast from Maine to Key West and every beach in between. He enjoyed family gatherings, RVing, riding motorcycles and helping all his clients with their real estate needs until his final day.
Relatives and Friends are invited to calling hours on Monday, March 18th from 9:30 to 11:00 am at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 at St. George’s Church, 38 Brattle St., Worcester. Rick will be laid to rest with full military honors at Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Ave., Paxton. In lieu of flowers, condolences may be expressed with a donation in Rick’s memory to the Animal Service adoption Center, 111 Young Road, E. Brookfield Ma 01515 where they adopted their beloved Ally.
