Richard J. Shulten, Sr. 84, of Dennisport formerly of Worcester passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 20th 2016 with family gathered at his side in the home that he loved on Cape Cod, known as “Summer Salts”.

Richard was born in Worcester, one of three children of Polish parents: Alfons and Sophia (Milewska) Shulten. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School, and joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, serving proudly aboard the Destroyer Strong. Soon after Richard’s discharge from the service and in 1956, he married the love of his life Lucia Pace and began a 59 year life together raising their family together in Worcester and then Dennisport.

Richard provided for his family, by working over 36 years as a route driver for the WRTA (Worcester Regional Transit Authority), before retiring.

He is survived by his wife Lucia; his three children Paula DeLorm, and her husband David of Caledonia, Michigan, Stephanie Law and her husband, Jack of Waterford, CT, and Richard J. Shulten Jr. of Dennisport; a brother, Paul J. Shulten and sister, Irene M. Shulten both of Worcester; three grandchildren whom he cherished, Jessica, Jaclyn and Joshua; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Richard was a member of the White Eagle, and the Alhambra Counsel, Knights of Columbus. A “Jack of all Trades”, Richard loved to tinker and fix whatever was needed for anyone who asked. He could repair most anything. Richard and Lucia also loved Antique cars and to care for their impeccable yard and garden in Dennisport, and spending winters in the warm Florida weather. Travel and day trips were always an enjoyable part of their life, walking the beaches, as well as the occasional visit to the Casinos.

Richard’s funeral Mass will be held Monday, July 25th at 11:30 am in Our Lady of Loreto Church, 37 Massasoit Rd. After U.S. Navy honors burial will be Private. There are no calling hours. The family requests that flowers be omitted and memorial remembrances in his name be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital , 501 St Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105. The MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St is honored to assist the family with arrangements.
