Peter Joseph McCabe, 79, died May 14th 2016 at UMass Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family after a period of declining health.
He was born March 30th 1937, in Rockaway, NY., son of Nora (Durkin) and Peter McCabe.
He leaves his wife Ginny, his childhood sweetheart and best friend of 57 years; three daughters, Maryann Toedt and husband Russell of Worcester, Kelly Mahan and husband Paul of Holden and Linda Kinkead and husband Thomas of Cumberland, ME. He also leaves five grandchildren, Caitlin, Chelsey and Nicholas Toedt and Connor and Eric Kinkead. He leaves sisters in law Mary O’Day and Louise Flynn and nephew Christopher O’Day. He was predeceased by his infant daughter, Anne Marie who died in 1961.
Peter graduated from Worcester Trade School in 1954. He was an all around athlete that excelled in basketball. He played on the city semi pro basketball team where one of his fondest memories was playing against Celtic great Bill Russell. Peter was a member of the U.S Army reserves and discharged in 1964. He worked at Wyman Gordan from 1959-1964. He then worked for Worcester Transit Authority as a bus driver where he retired in 1995.
Peter loved all sports. He was a coach for a women’s elite amateur softball team bringing them all the way to the World Championship Tournament. He was an avid golfer and former member of Holden Hills, Westminister and Wachusett Country Club. He currently played at Hillcrest Country Club as a proud member of the “Growlers”. His greatest joy was time spent with family. He cherished summers in Maine where he would walk on the beach with his beloved dog, Maddison, and many trips with his wife Ginny and their friends. Peter was a loving and caring man with a great sense of humor. He touched the lives of many. He will be missed but never forgotten.
Visiting hours for Peter will be on Tuesday, May 17th from 4:00 until 7:00pm at the CALLAHAN-FAY & CASWELL FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle St., Worcester. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 18th at 10:00am at St. Stephens Church, 355 Grafton St., Worcester. Burial will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
The family would like to thank the staff of 7ICU for their compassion and care, as well as the Oncology department at Umass Medical. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to St. Stephens Church.
