Paul G. Bernard, Jr., 74, of Spencer, died suddenly, Tuesday, Aug. 23 in St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, after being stricken ill at home.

He leaves his wife of 18 years, Viola D. (Norris) Bernard, his step sons; John C. Canty and his wife Cheryl of Charlton and Jeremy N. Picard of Spencer, his step daughter; Rebecca A. MacDonnell and her husband Luke of Rutland, sisters; Barbara Mitchell of Spencer and Paula Hinerth of No. Brookfield, a granddaughter; Lily MacDonnell, nieces and nephews.

Paul attended Spencer schools and later served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He then joined the U.S. Coast Guard where he obtained a Bachelor and Masters Degree. He retired as a Senior Chief after 28 years in 1997.

Born in Worcester, he was the son of Paul G. Bernard, Sr. and Stephanie (Povoka) Bernard.

His funeral will be held on Monday, Aug. 29, from the J.HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer with a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 7 Church St., Spencer. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. A calling hour will be held on Monday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. prior to the Mass in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mary, Queen of the Rosary Parish, 46 Maple St., Spencer, MA, 01562.
