Madeleine M. (Chollet) Matthews, 93, of Worcester passed away peacefully on Monday, October 29, 2018 at the Lutheran Home of Worcester after her decline with dementia.

She leaves her two sons, Richard Matthews and Robert Matthews of Worcester; two daughters, Nancy Haynes of Worcester, and Janice Carabba of Grafton; two grandchildren, Jason Carabba and his wife Jennifer and their twin sons Giovanni and Matteo of Grafton; Angela Dunn and her husband Tom of Auburn; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred Matthews, of 64 years in 2010; two brothers in France, Paul and George Chollet; and two son-in-laws, Rick Haynes and William Carabba.

Madeleine was born on May 7, 1925 in Joigny, France, daughter of Maurice and Henriete Chollet. She came to the United States as a war bride in 1946. She met her husband while he was stationed in her hometown serving as a U.S. Army paratrooper during World War II.

Madeleine was a devoted wife and mother who kept a wonderful home for her family. She possessed classic French beauty and charm to the outside world. She also had a tremendous heart, character and warmth inside. She will be greatly missed by her loving family.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of the Lutheran Home for all the wonderful care that was given to Madeleine in the last 5 years.

Funeral services and burial in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton, will be private. There are no calling hours.

The Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester, is directing arrangements.
