Lula M. (Whitted) Hughes, 68, of Worcester, passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at Memorial Hospital in Worcester.
She is survived by her loving husband, Nemiah “Leroy” Hibbert; two daughters, Latasha F. Hughes Thomasson and Twanna N. Sharpe, all of Worcester; two brothers, Grady Whitted of Butler, AL, and Frank Whitted of New Orleans; four sisters, Carrie Williams of Kenner, LA, Bonnie Rand of Montgomery, AL, Katie Wilcox of Irving, TX, and Emma Pace of Worcester; eight grandchildren, Shariff, Aja, Rishad, Olivia, and Emmanuel Thomasson, Tafar Lewis, Donte Sharpe, and Elijah Bamba; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers and a sister, Oliver and Johnny Whitted, and Diane Hughes. Lula was born in Butler, Alabama, daughter of the late Adam and Hattie (Rackley) Whitted. She graduated from Butler High School, later moving to Worcester in the late 1960’s. She graduated from Job Corps with her certification in Food Service and Childcare.
Lula worked as a cook and in housekeeping for many years, retiring from Holy Trinity Long Term Care in 2001, having previously worked at Salisbury Nursing Home for over fifteen years. She was a member of Second Baptist Church, where she was a missionary and member of the church choir. She enjoyed travel, gardening, and good times with her family and her circle of friends.
Calling Hours for Lula will be on Thursday, March 1, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. Her Funeral Service will be on Friday, March 2, at 11 a.m. in Second Baptist Church, 14 Hammond Street, Worcester. Interment will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Please join her family in a continued Celebration of Her Life, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Elk’s Lodge, 233 Mill Street, Worcester.
