Lena D. (Carota) O’Malley of Worcester, MA, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother passed away September 1, 2022, at Christopher House in Worcester, at the age of 101. Lena was born and raised in the Grafton Hill section of Worcester, daughter of the late James and Antoinette (Luzzo) Carota.
Lena was a graduate of Commerce High School in Worcester She worked at the City Treasurer’s Office at Worcester City Hall and Home Federal Savings Bank, from where she retired in 1986. Lena was an active member of Our Lady of Loreto Parish, The Guild of Our Lady of Providence, The Leisure Club of Our Lady of Loreto Church, The Golden Years of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, the Beato Angelo Dacri Women’s Club, and Sons of Italy.
In addition to her parents, Lena was predeceased by her devoted husband, Charles Patrick O’Malley, in 1986, and her siblings: brothers George and Angelo Carota, and sister Mary (Carota) Ciullo, Lena is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles O’Malley, Jr, and Carolyn O’Malley of Holden, as well as 3 granddaughters and their husbands: Kristen and Jason Upham of Westford, Katelyn and Ryan McGarity of Franklin, and Megan and Andrew Freedman of Upton, She also leaves 5 great-grandchildren: Tyler, Dylan, and Hailey Upham, Matthew Freedman, and Conor McGarity, who affectionately referred to her as GiGi, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Lena loved to laugh, dance, and shop but most of all enjoyed spending special time with her family. She lived life to the fullest and everyone she was around recognized her positive attitude. She attended every celebration for her 3 granddaughters, and especially loved taking them on yearly back-to-school and Christmas shopping sprees. Lena was kind and generous to all. She loved her family unconditionally, and they in turn loved her and were grateful for her kind and caring presence in their lives.
Lena’s son and his family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Christopher Heights and Christopher House, who graciously provided care and company to Lena during the last several years. In addition, they would like to thank the nurses from the Jewish Healthcare Center Hospice, who provided Lena comfort and care during her final week of life.
Services for Lena will be private. MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL is honored to assist. The family suggests donations in Lena’s memory to Christopher House Activities Department, 10 Mary Scano Dr, Worcester, MA 01605
