Laurence “Larry” R. Newell Jr., 73, passed away on October 29th, after a heroic struggle recovering from a traumatic brain injury while ice fishing last winter. He was born in Holden, the son of the late Laurence Sr. & Edith (Hawes) Newell. Larry grew up in Holden where he went to Wachusett Regional High School and met the love of his life, Joyce (Wright) Newell. He graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston with Associate Degree in Mechanical Design Engineering Technology, Associate in Science in Machine Process Technology and an Honorary Bachelor of Technology Degree. He moved to Worcester in 1973 and has lived there ever since.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 52 years Joyce (Wright) Newell of Worcester; a daughter, Rachel Lindquist and her husband, Kenneth R. Lindquist of Worcester; a son, Kevin L. Newell and his wife, Sonia Newell of Jefferson. He was loving known as “Boppy” to his 5 grandchildren, Tyler Lindquist, Paige Newell, Kaitlyn Lindquist, Ashley Newell & Matthew Newell. He leaves behind a sister, Lenora Newell of Worcester, and a sister-in-law, Susan Monopoli and her late husband, Michael Monopoli from Shrewsbury. He was predeceased by his sister-in-law, the late Jane Savage and her husband, the late Dennis Savage. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, Paula Benard, Vicki Ostromecky and longtime partner, John LaFlash, Mark and Gretchen Monopoli of Shrewsbury, Michael & Nancy Savage of West Hartford, CT, Amy Monopoli and her husband, Matthew Giles of Ludington, Michigan and Jessica Savage and Melissa Savage of Hubbardston.
Larry started his 49-year career as a Draftsman for Heald Machine Company in Worcester and worked his way up to Design Electrical Engineer during his 18-year career until the company closed. At the time of his accident, he was working full time at Mevion Medical Systems in Littleton, MA.
Larry loved to travel. He grew up going on vacations driving cross-country with his parents and did the same thing with his children when they were growing up hitting 46 of the 50 states. In the last few decades, he has loved to go on cruises with family and friends. Whether going with his late brother and sister-in-law, Jane and Dennis Savage, his dear friends Linda and Jim Bessette or going on vacation with his grandchildren. He also loved going to Ogunquit, ME every summer. He also loved going to dinner with his cousin, Richard Lemoine and John LeClair, on Friday nights.
Larry loved antiquing with his wife. He also enjoyed shooting, hunting, fishing and ice fishing. He was a member of Nimrod League of Holden, St. George Church and St. George Men’s Club, both in Worcester.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Larry’s family from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, November 3, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, November 4, at St. George Church, 40 Brattle St., Worcester. Burial will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Ave., Paxton. Donations in his name may be made to the Marginal Way Preservation Fund, P.O. Box 1455, Ogunquit, ME 03907.
