Subscription Update Obituary

John M. DiPilato, 90, of Worcester, formerly of Barre, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 18th, 2024, with loved ones gathered at his side.

John was born in the Bronx, NY the son of Italian immigrants, Joseph, and Isabella (Garofoli)  DiPilato, then moved to Brooklyn.  At the age of five, John and his family came to Worcester, more notably in an Italian neighborhood off Shrewsbury Street where he grew up.  John graduated from Commerce High School, then served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard as a medic. In 1955, John married Susan Tiscione and spent over 47 years raising their family with faith and family in Worcester, Holden and 31 years in Barre before Susan left his side on October 15th of 2002. John continued to reside in Barre before moving back to Worcester.

John worked in construction his entire life. First with the family business J.D. Wilson Construction, later with engineering companies, Haley and Ward and Tata and Howard Companies before retiring.

He is survived by two sons, Joseph J. DiPilato and his wife Kathleen of Box Elder, SD, formerly of Putnam CT and John DiPilato of Barre; two sisters, Marta Casillo  and her husband Gene of Lake Mary, Florida and Diana Dattis and her husband Cosmo of Vero Beach, Florida; a sister in law, Carmella DiPilato; four grandchildren, Amy and her husband Jerry , Jonathan and his fiancé Stephanie, Nicole and her husband Ryan, and John and his wife Kelly; five great grandchildren; Many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.  In addition to his parents, and wife Susan; two brothers, Nicholas and Joseph DiPilato, and a sister, Rose Doldo predeceased him.

John was a member of Our Lady of Mt Carmel Parish, the Knights of Columbus and fourth degree Bishop O’Reilly assembly, a member and past president of the former UNICO Club, and the ITAM Club. In his youth, John was an accomplished bowler, traveling New England earning accolades and trophies for his abilities. While a resident of Barre, he was a member and onetime chairperson of the Barre DPW board and was acknowledged for his dedicated service by the State of Massachusetts.

The DiPilato family would like to thank the 3rd Floor Lakeside ICU of the Umass-Memorial Hospital for the care and comfort they gave to John.

A period of calling hours will be held Thursday, January 25th from 9:30 am to 11:00 am in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. followed by a funeral service at 11 am. Entombment will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton. In lieu of flowers memorial remembrances in his name can be made to the Umas-Memorial Hospice, 650 Lincoln Street, Worcester 01605.
