John L. Smith, 86, of Worcester, passed away in St. Vincent’s Hospital on March 2, 2017, peacefully with his family by his side after suffering a stroke and a battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
John is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Delores “Dee” (Sbrogna) Smith, and his two children Michael J. Smith and Deborah C. O’Loughlin. He is also survived by his 5 grandchildren, Bryan, Andrew and Christopher Smith and Michael and David O’Loughlin.
John was born in Worcester, son of Doris Smith and grandson of Elizabeth and Ernest Smith. John graduated from South High School and served in the United States Marine Corps. He had a long career and retired from Wyman Gordon’s as a Foreman after 35 years. In his Retirement John worked alongside his wife Dee behind the counter at the Donut Café on Shrewsbury St.
John enjoyed the beach, playing cards, puzzles, Sudoku, Italian music and was an avid reader. John loved his cat Pumpkin and spending time with his family. John and Dee were married in Worcester and lived on Grafton Hill where they raised their family. They moved to Florida for 5 years but missed their Children and Grandchildren so they returned home to Worcester. John was a longtime member of the Church of St Margaret Mary, and subsequently The Church of St. Anne.
The Smith family would like to thank Dr. Gary Blanchard and his team – Ashley and Nancy for their wonderful and compassionate care of John.
John’s funeral will be held Tuesday March 7, 2017 from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME AND CHAPEL 370 Plantation St. with a Mass of Christian burial at 10:00AM in the Church of St. Anne. 130 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury. Calling hours will be held on Monday March 6, from 4PM to 7PM in the funeral home. Interment will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
