John J. Flanagan Jr., 69, of Worcester, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009 at home surrounded by his loving family.
He leaves his wife, Elizabeth W. Njoka-Flanagan; three daughters, Laura A. Demers and her husband John of Oxford, Deborah J. Flanagan of Shrewsbury, and Brenda L. Flanagan of Charlton; a brother, Michael Flanagan and his wife Elizabeth of Worcester; seven granddaughters, Heather, Megan and Taylor Demers, Christen, Jennifer and Caitlin Szklarz, and Ashley Elizabeth Flanagan; two great-grandaughters, Javiana and Allison; a niece, Mary Ellen Rutkiewicz and a nephew, Michael D. Flanagan Jr. His son, John J. Flanagan III, died in 1996.
John was born in Worcester, son of John J. and Hannah E. (Daly) Flanagan. He graduated from St. John's High School, then in Worcester, and attended Assumption College. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
John was a supervisor of food services on the University Campus of the UMass-Memorial Medical Center for the past 15 years. Previously, he owned and operated Shamrock Food Services for many years.
He was a member of St. Peter's Parish. He was a founder and former commissioner of the St. Joseph's Auburn Youth Basketball League.
John was always a thoroughly charitable person towards all people and all community organizations.
Calling hours are Friday, Nov. 13 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral will be Saturday, Nov. 14 from the funeral home with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's Church, 931 Main St., Worcester. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
