Subscription Update Obituary

John J. Balcom, 87, of Holden, passed away peacefully under the loving care of his family and staff at the Holden Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center on Thursday, October 16, 2014.

He leaves his wife of 59 years, Patricia A. (Hoey) Balcom; a son, David F. Balcom and his wife, Pamela of Leicester; a grandson, John Boguzis of Worcester; a great-granddaughter, Ava Boguzis; and several nephews and nieces. His brother, Peter Balcom and two sisters, Gladys Hirbour and Doris Balcom, predeceased him.

John was born in North Brookfield, son of Oscar P. and Nellie (Mahoney) Balcom. He graduated from St. Peter’s High School in Worcester where he was a member of its Football Hall of Fame and attended Gannon College in Erie, Pennsylvania. A veteran of the Korean Conflict, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Main South American Legion Post 341 in Worcester. He was a foreman at N.E. Power Service Co. in Worcester, retiring in 1992.

John was one of the most likeable persons you could ever hope to know. He was known for his kind heart and selfless nature.

The family would like to extend its appreciation to the nurses and staff at Holden Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center for their care and support during John ‘s stay.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with John’s family from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 21, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. His funeral will be held on Wednesday, October 22, from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. George’s Church, 38 Brattle St., Worcester. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to St. George’s Church, 40 Brattle St., Worcester, MA 01606.
