Gerald Vincent McDermott, 83, died Monday, September 5, 2022, at home in Cary, NC.
He was born in Worcester, son of Edward J. and Margaret A. (Flynn) McDermott, and graduated from St. John’s Preparatory School, College of the Holy Cross, and the University of Connecticut. Gerald proudly served in the U.S. Navy. He loved children and advocated for them during his thirty-seven years of service with the State of Massachusetts Department of Social Services.
Gerald is survived by his five children: Sean M. McDermott, Elizabeth A. (McDermott) Corey and her husband Richard L. Corey, Karen M. McDermott, Christopher T. McDermott and Kathleen J. McDermott; and his wife of thirty-six years, Judith A. McDermott. He is also survived by his brother, James F. McDermott, and two sisters, Mary T. Sullivan and Kathleen F. Abraham, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Margaret McGuigan, and four brothers, John, Edward, Raymond, and Thomas McDermott.
Gerald loved spending time with his large extended family. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time outdoors, admiring the sights and sounds of nature, fishing with the kids, and watching the birds. He loved celebrating his Irish heritage and never missed a St. Patrick’s day. He loved his several trips to Ireland and his most recent trip to Italy and England with his family. He loved to dance, if there was music his feet were ready to go.
Gerald’s funeral will be held Monday, September 12th from Callahan, Fay & Caswell Life Celebration Home, 61 Myrtle Street, Worcester with a Mass at 10am at St. John’s Church, 40 Temple Street. Burial will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Visiting hours to celebrate his life are Sunday, September 11th from 2-4pm in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Gerald’s memory may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
