Alberta M. (Charland) Banks, 82, of Auburn, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, with her loving family by her side. She was lovingly known as “Mammy” by her kids, grandkids, and great-grands.
Her beloved husband of 61 years, the late Paul J. Banks, Sr., passed on July 21, 2024, which absolutely devastated her. The high school sweethearts were prophesized in their senior yearbook to “leave hand-in-hand,” and that, they did.
Alberta leaves her devoted children: Paul J. Banks, Jr. and his wife Melissa, of Westminster, Keith P. Banks and his wife Rebecca, of Dudley; and Kimberlee E. Plante and her husband Colin M. Plante, Sr., of Auburn; her adored grandchildren, Zachary, Jacob, and Adam Banks, Henley Plante, and Colin M. Plante, Jr. and his wife Sarah; great-grandchildren, Judah and Abel Plante; her cherished sister, Claire Lane, of Worcester; her brother-in-law, Joseph Banks, Jr. and his wife Terry, of Auburn, and sister-in-law, Carolyn Bonnell and her husband Edward “Ted,” of Sterling; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Alberta was born in Allston, Massachusetts, daughter of the late Ernest and Ora (LaRose) Charland. She was brought up in Medway with her sister, and moved to Worcester in her teens. It was during her time at Commerce High School that she met Paul, and they graduated together with the Class of 1959.
Alberta and Paul settled in Auburn to begin their life together, and she remained a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother until she passed. She was very involved in her children’s activities, and once all her children were school-age, she began a long career as a beloved lunch lady in the Auburn schools. She followed them from middle school to high school, and once they all graduated, she went into the elementary school to be with the young kids again.
In her free time, Alberta loved playing bingo, visiting the casino, and vacationing to the Scarborough, Maine house with Paul. She also loved visiting with her lunch lady friend group, who would regularly meet up for breakfast.
The Banks family would like to extend a warm ‘thank you’ to the staff at Saint Vincent Hospital for their wonderful care for Alberta during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation (https://msfocus.org/Donate.aspx).
Per Alberta’s wishes, funeral services and burial will be held privately for her family. The Britton-Wallace Funeral Home is honored to be assisting with arrangements.
