Alan G. Court, 78, of East River Street, Orange, formerly of Rutland, died peacefully at home on Sunday, November 14, 2010, after an illness.

He leaves his wife, Carol A. (Foss) Court; five children, Stephen C. Court of Fitchburg, Cheryl L. Quimby of Portland, Maine, Brenda A. Goguen wife of David of Conway, New Hampshire, Barry A. Court of Daytona Beach, Florida and Scott Court; six step-children, Susan M. Larrabee wife of Jim of Phillipston, Philip T. Moran, Jr. husband of Donna of Holden, Elizabeth M. Duguay wife of Christopher of Winchendon, Peter J. Moran of Vancouver, Washington, Jennifer A. Williams wife of John of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and Timothy M. Moran husband of Kristine of Douglas; 20 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; and a brother, John “Jack” M. Court his wife Sally of Southington, Connecticut; and many nephews and nieces. A sister, Jean E. McKay predeceased him in 1961.

Alan was born in Melrose, son of Donald and Ina J. (Powers) Court and was raised in Holden. He was a 1949 graduate of Holden High School, attended Worcester State College, graduated from Eastern Illinois University, KAPPA Sigma KAPPA TAU in 1953 where he was the recipient of a National Science Foundation Grant, and attended a summer program at Rochester College in Rochester, New York. He later earned a M.S. from Worcester State College in 1969. Alan was a lifelong educator having taught in Charleston, Illinois, the Joslin School in Oxford, as well as schools in Catskill and Greenville, New York, and Jefferson Elementary School in Holden. For the last 32 years of his career Al served as teacher and Assistant Principal at the former Holden Junior High School, Middle School and Jefferson Elementary Schools in Jefferson, retiring in 1995.

He was a former member and past president (1963) of the Holden Teacher’s Association, member and chairman of the Christian Board of Education at the Holden Baptist Church, and member, treasurer of the former Hubbardston Congregational Church where he also sang in the choir. While living in Rutland, he was a member of the Worcester Men of Song and acted on stage with the Central Mass Onstage. He was an Eagle Scout and a lifetime Scout leader of Troop 180 in Holden. He enjoyed photography, biking, cross country skiing, camping, golfing and loved the Maine coast.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 18th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 4th, in the funeral home. Burial will be private in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton at the family’s convenience.
